Volunteers are the life-blood of all Habitat for Humanity® affiliates. In today's difficult economic climate, we need you more than ever - to help us build and repair homes, but also to help us raise funds! If you are interested in assisting with various fundraiser ideas, please contact our offices!
CONSTRUCTION – RESTORE – OFFICE
As you know, we cannot build houses without volunteers who provide over 75% of the labor associated with house building (trades are brought in for concrete work, plumbing, electrical and HVAC). Habitat of Jefferson County offers plenty of opportunity for volunteering – on the construction site, in our ReStore and at the office. We are on the build site Tuesday through Saturday, and in the office Monday through Friday.
If you or your corporate team, church, or other organization that would like to come out and work with us, contact Casey Lourde.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Work Schedule: Tuesday - Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday work day starts at 8:30 am. Lunchbreak is one hour, typically at 11:30 a.m.
Habitat for Humanity does not provide lunch. You will need to make your own arrangements. We do have a cooler if you decide to pack a lunch. Upon arrival to the worksite, just look for our construction staff - they're the ones in the blue Habitat for Humanity t-shirts. If you are a first time volunteer be sure to sign and turn in a liability waiver.
Things to bring with you: Please bring your own work gloves if you have them. If you have your favorite tool belt or hammer feel free to bring that along, but do NOT bring your own power tools. Wear loose-fitting light weight clothes for spring,
summer, fall because it gets hot. (For winter, bring layered clothing.) Make sure that your footwear is suitable for a construction site and is sturdy (no sandals, flip-flops or
slip-on shoes). Sunscreen & hats!!
What we provide: We provide all needed tools (hand and power), along with protective eyewear, sunscreen, water and Gatorade.
Age requirements: In order to work on the Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County construction site, you must be at least 16 years of age. If you are under the age of 16 you will not be permitted on the worksite. Youth groups with members younger than 16 need to make prior arrangements with our affiliate so that we can provide alternate activities (shed builds, etc.).
VISITING VOLUNTEERS
2006 was the year of the visiting volunteer – people traveled from all corners of the country and even from Canada to work with us on our Rita Recovery Program.
We still host visiting volunteers through Collegiate Challenge and through church groups. If you are interested in visiting our area to work with Habitat, please fill out the visiting volunteer application form and email it to Uliana Trylowsky. If you are a college student, contact Habitat International to learn about volunteer opportunities through Collegiate Challenge.
No construction experience is required, although experienced volunteers are always appreciated!
