BEAUMONT – Beautify Beaumont, Inc. will give away 1000 seedlings on Saturday, February 20, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the HEB on Dowlen Road kicking off the organizations efforts to replace Beaumont’s tree canopy destroyed by Hurricanes Ike and Rita.
“We’re starting small but have a big goal,” said Laurie Leister, president of the rekindled organization that was founded in the 1980s. “We want to have planted 15,000 trees in Beaumont by the year 2015.”
With this initial planting, Beautify Beaumont is distributing 1-gallon pot hardwood seedlings and the instructions for planting them. The trees are a variety of hardwoods.
The Mary Howell Garden Club and Munro’s Cleaners have made financial contributions that will assist with the underwriting of this project.
“We’re grateful for the donation and hope in the future we can raise awareness and additional monies to fund giving away even larger trees,” said Leister. “In the very near future we hope to partner with local companies to give 5-gallon trees and bigger.”
Leister said everyone is invited to come and get a seedling until they run out.
“You know it’s a great family project to plant a tree,” said Leister. “And it is going to make Beaumont more beautiful for our children and everyone who calls this great place home.”
Beautify Beaumont, Inc. is a non-profit local organization with a mission to: fund the design and construction of beautification projects, including landscaping and tree renewal for public areas in Beaumont. This organization has a history of establishing landscape islands throughout downtown Beaumont.
