March For Meals is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on a local level. Senior nutrition programs across the United States promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. The campaign takes place in the month of March because it was during this month that the law was enacted that included senior meal programs in the Older Americans Act.
Mayors For Meals is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local mayors. Mayors and other local officials deliver meals on one day in March to show their support of their local senior nutrition program. This year, Mayors For Meals day will be March 24, 2010. Our local Mayors participating include Port Arthur Mayor Deloris Prince, Beaumont Mayor Becky Ames, Silsbee Mayor Herbert Muckleroy, Groves Mayor Brad Bailey, and Nederland City Councilmember Bert Rogers.
Nutrition & Services for Seniors delivers hot, nutritious meals to nearly 1,200 homebound seniors in Jefferson and Hardin counties every weekday. For many seniors the daily visit by a Meals on Wheels volunteer is the only human contact they have all day. In addition to delivering meals, the program provides these seniors with a daily check on their health and well being.
For more information on the Meals on Wheels program, volunteer opportunities or make a donation, please call Nutrition & Services for Seniors at (409) 892-4455.
